How to use coords.io

The short version of everything the map does, with the buttons named as you find them.

Get coordinates

Click (or tap) any point on the map. The coordinates panel top-right shows the pair as lat, lng. Click the value to copy it. The × clears the selection, so does Escape.

You can also paste coordinates into the search: decimal, with degree signs or in the Google style all work. "Show coordinates" jumps there.

Add it to your home screen as an app

coords.io works as an app on your phone, no store needed: full screen, its own icon, always the current version. On an iPhone, open coords.io in Safari, press Share and choose "Add to Home Screen". On Android, open it in Chrome, press the menu and choose "Add to Home screen" or "Install app".

The home screen app is a browser of its own: sign in there once more, with the code from the mail or your passkey, and your favourites come with the account. The link in the mail opens Safari, not the app, so type the code.

Change your location

Select a point, then press the pin beside the stopwatch ("Set as my location"). Or press "Use my device location" and allow the browser to read it. Your location gets its own marker. While another point is selected, the panel shows the distance and the waiting time from your location. Its name takes you back there, the small cross removes it. Set it again from any other point whenever you move.

With Plus, every event and hotspot shows the waiting time from your location, and the lists can be sorted by it. Waiting times are a community rule of thumb, not an official table.

Calculate a cooldown

Select the start point and press the stopwatch in the coordinates panel. Then click the target on the map, or search for it in the header. The card shows distance and cooldown, capped at two hours. From and To are both copyable.

"Start timer" counts it down. Only one timer runs at a time. You can rename it, fold it, hide its line on the map and, on a desktop, drag it anywhere. The alarm beeps at the end. It also sends a notification, even if the map is in the background or closed: the browser asks for permission when you start the timer. On an iPhone, add the map to your home screen first (see above); Safari itself cannot show notifications. Switch it off on the card or under Display.

If your location is set, "Cooldown from my location" starts the calculation from there.

Save favourites

Favourites need an account: sign in with your e-mail address, no password, or with a passkey once you have one. Then press the heart in the coordinates panel, or on the card of a selected event or hotspot. A free coordinate gets a turquoise pin of its own and can be renamed. Favourites sync to every device you sign in on.

Sign in with a passkey

After a sign-in, coords.io offers to create a passkey: "Create passkey" stores it on this device, and next time your face, fingerprint or device PIN signs you in without a code. You can add one later under Account, "Set up a passkey on this device", give it a name and remove it again. An account holds up to ten, one per device is enough.

Signing in with a passkey asks for no address: the browser offers it in the e-mail field, or use "Sign in with a passkey". The code by email keeps working and is the way back if a device is lost.

Build your own route

Open Favourites in the account drawer. Press "+ New tag" and give it a name, or type a tag name on a favourite. Then drag places onto the tag chip, or the chip onto a place. On a phone, use "Add tag" on each row.

Click the chip to open the tour. The order of the list is the order of the route: move stops with the arrows, or press "Sort by distance" to let the map suggest a short order. The head row sums places, kilometres and cooldown. With two or more places, the route draws on the map and can be downloaded as GPX. "Delete tag" keeps the places saved.

Two faster ways to fill a tag sit behind its "More about this tag" button: "Add places…" takes a pasted list, one coordinate per line, in the order pasted; "Add from the map" closes the drawer and makes every tap on the map a stop, the header search too, until "Done" on the route card. "Undo last stop" takes back the last one. In the flat list, the arrows under "My order" arrange the favourites themselves.

Follow a series

Events at several places, such as a stamp rally, are series. Select one and its route appears, the places numbered. Hover a leg (tap it on a phone) to see distance and cooldown. In the Events tab, "Route" orders the places along the route, "By date" by their dates. The list itself sorts "By date" or "A–Z", and by "Waiting time" once you have set your location.

Download a GPX

Every series and every tag with two or more places offers a GPX: the "GPX" chip in the row, or the download icon on the route card. The file holds one track with a named point per place, in route order, and opens in every map and navigation app. A single event or hotspot has no route to download.

Share a link

"Copy the link to this entry" on a selected event or hotspot copies a link that opens the map there. A selected coordinate is shared as coords.io/?p=lat,lng. An event link never contains its coordinates.

Free and Plus

Browsing is free: the map, the hotspots, the cooldown, favourites and a few current events with everything. Plus adds the whole calendar with its places, routes and GPX files, which time window runs where, waiting times from your location and your own check marks. An ember padlock marks what Plus unlocks.
